In 1829, a $5 annual fee would give members of RIT's forerunner, the Rochester Athenaeum,
access to great American orators like Oliver Wendell Holmes, Horace Greeley and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
In 1891, the Athenaeum merged with the Mechanics Institute. In 1944 the school changed its name to Rochester Institute of Technology.

visit our historical timeline, view videos and write down your own
